Does having a favicon on your web page or blog increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
This is a question that I have been asked before. After performing some research, and thinking about it, I came upon the answer.
Maybe…
I realize that this is NOT a good answer.
Actually a custom favicon on your site doesn’t directly help your Search Engine Optimization, but it does not hurt you either.
A custom favicon is useful because it tells people about your site. It is your brand. A custom favicon helps you sell your site and the information you provide.
The purpose of SEO is to make your website or Blog more friendly to search engines. A good Search Engine Optimization strategy can go a long way to getting traffic directed to your site. It is imperative to learn as much about Search Engine Optimization as you can. I recently had a set of video tutorials on TheTeachingBox that taught basic SEO concepts and how to implement them.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Video Series – Traffic Generation
Stop by and take a look at the video series. It is well presented and the author gives some good tips on increasing the traffic to your site.
So the Question on the table is:
Does A Favicon Help Search Engine Optimization?
I have given my thoughts, now what do you think?
While you ponder the answer, stop by the Favicon Generator Script Page and make your own custom favicon for your website or blog.

Maybe, maybe not… I'm not sure either. If it does, it's probably a very small effect. However, as far as I understand it, Search Engines try to find sites with the best user experience. As favicons add to user experience, I would argue that there's a good chance that they do support SEO value. I work in legal marketing and I find it surprising how few lawyers have favicons on their websites.
